StarCraft II, one of the biggest and arguably best RTS games ever made will no longer receive new content. Blizzard has announced that the game, now it's reached its ten-year mark, will no longer be expanded upon as it looks for the next step in the StarCraft universe.
The lights aren't being turned off, as such, the game will continue to be supported lightly by Blizzard, but the development team aren't going to be making any major improvements or changes in the future.
This was announced in a Blizzard blog page by Rob Bridenbecker who is the executive producer and vice president of Classic Games at Blizzard Entertainment. The post says "We're going to continue supporting StarCraft II in the same manner as we have with our previous longstanding games, such as Brood War, focusing primarily on what our core and competitive communities care about most. What this means is that we're not going to be producing additional for-purchase content, such as Commanders and War Chests, but we will continue doing season rolls and necessary balance fixes moving forward.
"On that last note, we're not planning a Q4 balance update given that we did one a few months ago, but as always, we do plan to continue doing them as needed in the future. StarCraft II esports, which is part of the highest echelon of professional competitive gaming, will also continue going strong as it has been through our partners ESL Gaming and GSL."
Bridenbecker stresses that the fans are "one of the most passionate, creative, and dedicated communities in all of gaming" and thanking them for the support they've shown for the game over the years.
It's a bittersweet moment as not many games can say that they have the legacy of StarCraft II, however, winding down new content for StarCraft means that Blizzard can look to the future for what the series can do next.
