‘Stardew Valley’ Creator Working On New Games, Asks For No Hype

“I'm not setting out to make the next indie smash hit…”

Eric Barone, aka 'ConcernedApe', has urged fans to calm down after the Stardew Valley creator announced he was working on two new games, each connected to the Stardew universe.

Stardew Valley is one of the biggest indie hits of 21st gaming, with the farming/life simulator passing 10 million copies sold at the beginning of 2020. Barone began working on the game, which is available for all current consoles, PC and mobile, back in 2012, expanding and refining it into the charming monster it is today. So, naturally, the announcement that he was planning two new games caused a stir within the huge Stardew Valley fanbase.

On February 11th, Barone tweeted that he was "working on a couple of new projects", in answer to someone asking him if there'd be future games set within the Stardew Valley universe. He added: "One takes place in the world of Stardew Valley, but is not a farming game. The other, I'm not 100% sure about the world yet, but it will tie into Stardew Valley in some way."

Back in 2017, Barone teased that he had something new and distinctly Stardew-shaped up his sleeve, but this tweet represented our first real confirmation that a new project was afoot. And not one, but two. Bonus! But now Barone has returned to Twitter to ask people to, like, cool their jets somewhat. He's not looking to make anything that rivals the amazing success of Stardew Valley.

Barone has written that he is "not setting out to make the next indie smash hit", and that he just wants to make "another game that I enjoy and am happy with". And that is the right way to look at these things, isn't it? I mean, it helps when your previous project was an almighty mega-hit, but still: make games for yourself, and if other people like them a lot, too, that's cool.

Barone stressed that people shouldn't "get too hyped at this stage", and that he wants to "avoid too much hype or speculation". So, I guess don't hold your breath waiting for more news on these next projects, as Barone will likely go a bit quiet on them, until there's something of substance to be said, or shown.

And it's not like Stardew Valley can't fill the time between now and whenever Barone shows off what's next for him. It's a game that never stops giving, as the 100s and 1,000s of hours that players have put into it are a testament to.
