Should the Dark Souls franchise have an "easy" mode? It's a question that, for some reason, causes heated debates in the gaming world on a regular basis.
Some argue that all games should have a better range of difficultly/accessibility options so that we can all enjoy them. Others argue that to compromise on the fiery challenge of Dark Souls would be an affront to FromSoftware's artistic vision.
Of course, many of the gamers that argue the latter point are probably the same ones who signed a petition demanding Naughty Dog remake The Last Of Us Part II though... so it's all rather muddled. And exhausting.
Still, while we wait for an "official" way to modulate Dark Souls difficulty. there are always mods (for PC gamers, at least). There are all kinds of mods that adjust the difficulty of the games in all manner of ways, but this latest effort from modder Asasasasasbc is easily my favourite to date.

As spotted by PC Gamer, Modern Firearm is a Dark Souls 3 mod that swaps out ranged weapons like crossbows for automatic weapons like assault rifles. It's genius, and exactly as brilliantly unbalanced as you'd expect it to be. Tired of trying to beat the Abyss Watchers in a fair fight? Simply step into the arena and blow the bastards away with an AK47.
The mod includes a number of brilliantly made weapon skins, as well as new audio and visual effects to really sell the idea that a modern day arms dealer has come to Lothric. Oh, and every weapon has an alternate firing mode, just in case you were worried it wasn't Dark Souls enough anymore.
The "bullets" are technically still arrows/bolts, but a higher fire rate and increased damage means you'll barely notice. Check it out for yourself below, or via this link here if you'd rather go straight to the source.

I'm sure turning an RPG infamous for its methodical gameplay and tense boss battles into a fast-paced FPS is enough to make purists pull their hair out. But also, who cares? This mod knows it's ridiculous, and embraces itself for who it is.
On a more practical level, Modern Firearm could be just the thing to get your Call Of Duty-obsessed mate into something a little different. Who knows? Today it could be assault rifles in Dark Souls 3, tomorrow they could be starting their first Bloodborne playthrough.
