Graphics aren't the most important part of games, says fans

Gamers agree graphics aren't the most important part of new releases, and should be the icing on the cake, not the cake itself

A wise man by the name of Reggie Fils-Aimé once said, “If the game’s not fun, why bother?” and it seems like gamers are starting to take it to heart, as they care less and less about graphics and more about gameplay.

Graphics in video games have always been a bit of a rat race, with game developers and console manufacturers all striving to make the latest releases look as realistic as possible.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is out now, and we couldn't be more excited. Take a look below

Xbox and PlayStation have been at each other’s throats for years, trying to one-up each other with more and more powerful consoles, just so Forza Motorsport players can tear across realistic-looking asphalt, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 players can see their own reflection in the windows they swing by.

That being said, most players believe recent releases have focused too much on the game’s environments and how pretty it looks, creating games that look great, but aren’t very engaging.

Reddit user WhatAmIDOINg342 asked the community: “Do people actually care about graphics?

“I was showing my friend Diablo 3 because I thought he would be interested in trying it out. He told me that graphically ‘it looks like s***’ I mean yeah it is a decade old but the game is still really fun. Don't get me wrong I love good graphics, but refusing to even try a game out because it is graphically dated just seems silly.”

Safe to say others were in agreement, with many believing that while graphics are important for new releases, they should simply enhance the gameplay, not be the main selling point.

“Good art direction will always age better than good graphics.”

“Graphics are the icing on the cake. It’s nice but the cake is what matters.”

“It's totally fine to care about graphics, video games are an audio-visually medium at the end. You should just not put graphics about everything else.”

This year has given us some truly stunning graphical showcases, with many more set to release next year, but if the game isn’t enjoyable to begin with the fancy visuals aren’t going to change anything.
