GTA 5 just landed on Nintendo Switch, runs as you'd expect

It's no wonder that GTA 5 was never released on the Nintendo Switch

GTA V is one of the biggest video games ever and the only game that could eclipse it would likely be the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI.

When GTA V was originally released in 2013 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, it pushed console hardware to the limits. Looking back, it seems remarkable that GTA V ran as well as it did on console hardware over a decade ago.

Following the success of Grand Theft Auto V and its online offering, GTA Online, Rockstar Games then ported the popular game to PC, followed by PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, concluding with a new-gen port in 2022. GTA V proved to be a success on all the platforms that benefited from its release.

However, one notable exclusion from the many releases of GTA V is Nintendo’s hybrid console, the Switch. It’s no secret that the Nintendo Switch is powered by dated hardware which is why the release of the Switch 2 is expected sooner rather than later. That being said, given the fact that GTA V originally ran on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 with a great deal of success, surely a Nintendo Switch port wouldn't be out of the question, right?

Of course, we’ve seen no official release of GTA V on Nintendo Switch, but as reported by Game Rant, that hasn't stopped modders from taking matters into their own hands. The modders in question that have attempted to perform such a miracle are known collectively as Superstar South Studios.

I say “attempted” for good reason and that’s because GTA V running on the Nintendo Switch performs how we’d expect it to, like absolute pants. A clip was shared on the Superstar South Studios Twitter account and to say that GTA V is choppy, would be an understatement.

Regardless, it’s still impressive that this talented group of modders has achieved what they have with GTA V on the Switch. It would be nice to see an official watered-down release of GTA V on the Nintendo hybrid one day, but we wouldn't recommend holding your breath waiting for that to happen.

As for what the future holds for the Rockstar Games series, GTA VI will be released in 2025 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
