Nintendo drops surprise free download you can grab right now

We know what we're going on our lunch break

We love a satisfying Nintendo Partner Direct. They don’t always deliver, but when they do, they certainly pack a punch – like the first one of 2024.

On 21 February, Nintendo treated us to a whole host of upcoming titles from its partners, many of which have been long anticipated. What really stole the show, at least for us, was the surprise drop none of us had anticipated.

Even if you normally shy away from DIY, Pepper Grinder is a Nintendo game worth checking out

Available for you to play right now is a free demo of Pepper Grinder; this adorable looking pixel-art game is not to be underestimated, nor is it here to bring us those sweet cosy vibes. This is an action packed adventure that won’t let you rest until its epic conclusion.

It’s serving the chaos of classic sonic games, in which you honestly feel like the world is still moving even once Sonic (and you) are stationary. I’m not sure I can handle the intensity this new game is bringing, but for free, I’m willing to try!

The full game won’t launch until 28 March, however, the demo is waiting for you to test your skills and find out if you have what it takes to drill your way through land and sea. You’re going to experience a lot of “thrilling drilling” – we can’t take credit for that pun, that’s the devs’ fine work.

Just in case you’re not a Nintendo Switch player, there’s still a demo to be found over on Steam, everybody’s favourite PC games store. But a word of advice for Mac players: don’t bother. At least not yet. You see, Pepper Grinder does intend to become playable for Mac users, but right now only Microsoft users can enjoy the demo.

Of course, those of you on your Switch can just carry on as you pick up that drill and go to town on every enemy and mound of earth that blocks your path. Remember: the demo is out now, but the game isn’t out until 28 March.
