Horror game The Whisperer is now available to download for free via GOG.

Happy Halloween! If you’re looking for a spooky game to keep you entertained tonight, then I may have just the thing. Horror release The Whisperer is currently available for PC gamers to grab for free for a limited time.

The offer is courtesy of the CD Projekt RED owned GOG. The digital storefront regularly runs giveaways, with The Whisperer being the latest free release. Developed and published by Studio Chien d’Or, The Whisperer was originally released back in 2021. It’s a story-driven point and click adventure, set in Lower Canada at the beginning of the 19th century. You’ll investigate an abandoned trading post in the hopes of unravelling the ‘terrible mystery’ it holds.

Horror hit Dead Space recently landed on Xbox Game Pass.

The synopsis reads, “Lower Canada, 1814. A trading post in a remote valley is found abandoned. The two winterers who inhabited it have disappeared. Robert, a voyageur of the North West Company, is tasked in investigating their disappearance. To find the truth, he will have to face horrors of all kinds.” Developers cite Scratches and The Dark Eye as games that inspired them.

It only takes around 45 minutes to complete The Whisperer so it really is a bite-sized Halloween treat. It serves as a prelude to The Whispering Valley but it does function as its own standalone story too. Please be aware though that developers warn that the game deals with difficult themes, including depression, guilt, and suicide, with depictions of graphic violence.

The Whisperer is free to grab on GOG but only for a limited time. At the time of writing, there is one day, 12 hours, and 33 minutes left on the countdown clock. This means that the giveaway should end at 11pm GMT on 1 November. One review read, “The atmosphere and narrative of The Whisperer is compelling and foreshadows promising things to come in The Whispering Valley,” while another said, “The overall atmosphere and story were pretty great.”
