Baldur's Gate 3 patch has 'completely broke' the game, players say

A recent Baldur's Gate 3 patch has completely broken the game for some players.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock lately, you may have heard of a little RPG called Baldur’s Gate 3.

Developed by Larian Studios, Baldur’s Gate 3 was actually released in 2020 as an early-access game on PC. So long before we console gamers got to see what all the fuss was about, PC gamers were causing mayhem and romantically wooing everyone in sight in the Forgotten Realms.

Alas, Baldur’s Gate 3 was released in its full form this year on PC and PlayStation 5 with an Xbox Series X|S launch on the way, and it soon became a standout competitor for this year's Game of the Year accolade for 2023, a year which has blessed us with some truly great games.

That being said, even the best video games will more than likely require post-launch patches to fix reported issues that may have been unforeseen during development. So in essence, any post-launch patch should improve the game. Well, unfortunately, that is not always the case.

“PSA: the latest Baldur's Gate 3 patch completely broke my game on PS5,” announced Redditor AlphaPot breaking the bad news on the thread. “I would 100% wait if you were thinking of picking it up until there is a fix or Larian Studios acknowledges the issue.”

AlphaPot explained: “The latest patch that dropped essentially made Act 3 of the game unplayable. This isn't just performance issues or texture pop-ins (like pre-patch), the entire scripting of the game seems to buckle once you enter this section."

“Everything just stops, your party won't follow you, you can't do basic commands or talk to people. NPCs just run into the wall as if you've lost internet connection in an online game. It takes at least five to 10 minutes for the game to 'catch up' and let you do things and this is not an exaggeration, and then it does it all again as soon as you hit a new area. Reloading won't fix this either.”

Come to think of it, I’ve experienced similar issues this week when playing Baldur’s Gate 3 in which my companions suddenly refused to follow me. To fix this, I’ve had to go into my camp, ask the companion to unfollow me and then ask them to follow me again. AlphaPot also recommended a YouTube video that might help to fix a companion issue for fellow Reddit users.

It seems that much of the thread has also experienced similar problems with Baldur’s Gate 3.

“My wife and I are playing separate save files on the same PS5. She’s experiencing this issue, I’ve not. As others have said, the difference is I started Act 3 prior to the latest patch and she did not. I feel bad for her, because it’s literally unplayable, whereas I’m having no issue at all,” exclaimed dlifson. “Larian Studios needs to hotfix ASAP.”

“On my third playthrough currently and this last patch has had the most bugs for me,” replied another Redditor. “Companions not following, magic mirror taking over 30 seconds to close after saving, Voss being stuck in Raphael's room, items sometimes disappearing when dropped on the ground, enemies die and the camera does an ultra zoom on the body as it rag dolls, and others I have forgotten.”

Hopefully, Larian Studios will be aware of these issues and a patch will be inbound. Baldur’s Gate 3 is out now on PC and PlayStation 5, and an Xbox Series X|S release is expected next month.
