Horizon Zero Dawn meets The Last Of Us in underrated PlayStation Plus freebie

One of the beauties of subscribing to PlayStation Plus is that we get to play a variety of video games that we might not otherwise play, such as the criminally underrated Days Gone.

Developed by Bend Studio, Days Gone is set in a post-apocalyptic world in which much of the human race has turned into blood-thirsty and rabid zombies or as they’re known in-game, “Freakers”. When Days Gone launched for PlayStation 4 in 2019, it understandably had a bit of a bad reputation. For starters, the PS4 often struggled with the demands of hundreds of Freakers being on the screen at any one time and its story took a while to get going. However, that didn't stop Days Gone from being one of my favourite video games in recent years, eventually.

“Ride into a desperate dog-eat-dog world ravaged by a deadly pandemic as a drifter and bounty hunter, Deacon St. John. Risk the threats of the broken road on the back of your trusty drifter bike as you face swarms of mindless feral Freakers – and equally terrifying humans,” reads the description of the game. “Unpredictable weather and different times of day and night can cause incredible danger and shocking surprises… and everything wants you dead.”

Days Gone features a vast open world, perhaps not too dissimilar to that of Horizon Zero Dawn, only less futuristic sci-fi and more barren wastelands filled with raiders and the undead. It also had a crafting system similar to The Last of Us, but that’s perhaps where the similarities end. If anything, I’d say that Days Gone is what you’d get if the TV series’ Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead got together and had a baby.

Is Days Gone a perfect game, no? But once its story kicks in after a few hours, hopefully, you will be as invested in Deacon’s story as he is invested in finding his wife Sarah. What’s more, Days Gone is included in the PS Plus Extra and Premium tiers. So if you subscribe to either, I’d wholeheartedly recommend checking this game out.

Days Gone is out now on PC and PlayStation 4. Oh, and if you have a PlayStation 5, Days Gone runs sweetly on the newer system.
