The Last of Us Part 2 deserves ‘a second chance’, gamer urges fellow players

The Last of Us Part II is an interesting study. It’s one of the most critically-acclaimed and awarded games of all-time and while there are some players who agree with that sentiment, there are others who have blasted endless hate at the sequel since its release.

Personally, I'm in the former camp. It tends to whittle down to Abby. Can you understand her side of the story, or are you too angry to do so? I’d certainly urge you to do the former. Then again, Abby is hands down my favourite character so of course I’m going to say that. The rumour mill claims that a PS5 native version of The Last of Us Part II is on the way, with franchise composer Gustavo Santaolalla adding fuel to that fire - so you may soon have the perfect opportunity to re-experience the game. One player (and former disliker) is saying that’s exactly what you should do, declaring that the game deserves a second chance.

Reddit user yousefameed0 wrote, “Currently giving Part II a second chance. Gotta say, my perspective changed.” He continued, “Ellie and Abby are exactly the same character. The only reason people tend to hate Abby is because we were given the story of TLOU in Ellie and Joel's [point of view], but if the story’s [point of view] were to be swapped, Joel would be the antagonist while Abby is the protagonist. This is just a thought I had. I now appreciate TLOU Part II more.”

Exactly! That’s why I find the game so interesting. There are no ‘good guys’ and ‘bad buys’. Abby is no worse than Joel nor Ellie. It’s all about perspective. One user added, “Abby is far more justified. People have hated it for the sake of it. Part II is a much better game in my opinion.” Someone else commented, “How do I upvote this twice?”

Another user said, “People wanted a safe sequel but ND said f**k that. I love both games.” It’s a bold sequel, there’s no denying that. It’s nice to see people reaching at least an appreciation of the story, even if they still can’t fully sympathise with Abby. I shouldn’t imagine The Last of Us Part II will ever fully shake off its critics but that’s okay. You can’t please everyone.
