The PlayStation 5 is getting an unexpected price hike, thanks to the new 'slim' models.

After Sony’s bombshell announcement of the new PlayStation 5 models yesterday, fans now have even more choices when it comes to upgrading.

Take a look at the new PlayStation 5 models below.

This is only for a limited time though, as PlayStation confirmed during its recent blog post that once stock of the standard PS5s are gone, only the new 'slim' variants will be sold.

The new models are significantly smaller and slimmer compared to their predecessors, though their reduced size hasn’t exactly translated into a cheaper price, thanks to a very cheeky-priced add-on for the digital version.

The first two PlayStation 5 models either gave you the option to buy a console with a disc drive, or one without. The new models are the same, though if you buy the all-digital version and change your mind you can buy an attachable disc drive for it.

The disc drive will set you back $80, not cheap by any means, and when you combine it with the $450 console cost, you get a total of $530 by buying them separately. That’s $30 more than it would have cost to just buy the console that comes with the disc drive in the box.

It joins another bizarre decision from Sony to charge consumers separately for a vertical PS5 stand. The original models came with a stand that could either display your console on its side or standing upright, but the new ones will only come with a horizontal stand.

Combine that with PlayStation Plus memberships going up in price, and you find that PlayStation fans are paying significantly more than they used to for features and add-ons that originally came as standard.

The new PlayStation 5 consoles will launch later this year.
