It’s been a while since horror fans had something to sink their teeth into. 2024 has been a bit light on the spookiness. PlayStation owners will, however, be able to get to grips with Crow Country, a new horror exclusive to the console.
If you’re a fan of low-poly, low budget horror, then this is the game for you. Personally, I love being taken back to those OG PlayStation vibes when it comes to horror - it leaves a good amount up to your imagination, while utilising creepy, almost doll-like characters to drive home the creepy feelings.
The OG Resident Evil is still so atmospheric after all these years.
This is “a survival horror adventure featuring a rich atmosphere; a strong, tangible sense of place; a small but memorable cast of characters; meaningful exploration; engaging puzzles; and most of all-a beautiful, uncanny blend of tension and tranquility.” You can’t ask for much more, let’s be honest.

The vibes being given off are reminiscent of Resident Evil, with some character and environment flavour coming from Final Fantasy VII's polygonal art, and the plodding Twin Peaks-style soundtrack makes everything feel woozy and heady. I’m so down for this one. I’m not the only one, as commenters on the trailer seem equally interested with one saying, “It's so awesome to see PS1/low polygon becoming a visual style, much like how 8/16 bit has.” And another potential fan says, “If the time traveler goes back in time and release this game in the PS1 era, then this would've been an instant classic by now.”
“Even the fashion looks 1998. This is just...so perfect” comments one user, and they’re spot on. The whole trailer has a wonderful 90s aesthetic. As someone who grew up with these graphics it’s great to see them used correctly, where they can build atmosphere.
Crow Country will be one to watch. It's set to release on 8 May but a free demo is available to enjoy on the PlayStation Store right now.
