PlayStation Plus subscribers warned they have last chance to play free 9/10 horror adventure

PlayStation Plus subscribers have just a couple of weeks left to check out The Missing J.J Macfield and the Island of Memories.

Today is an exciting day in the PlayStation Plus monthly calendar. It’s the day we discover the latest January extra and premium tier offerings.

In case you missed it, January’s essential tier line-up consists of A Plague Take: Requiem, Nobody Saves The World, and Evil West, which is a solid offering in my opinion. Let’s hope the soon-to-be-revealed extra and premium drop is just as strong. We all know that alongside adding new games, several titles also depart PlayStation Plus each month. This time around, 10 games will be bidding us farewell: Back 4 Blood, Devil May Cry 5, Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition, It Takes Two, Jett The Far Shore, The Missing J.J Macfield and the Island of Memories, Mitsurugi Kamui Hikae, Omno, Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, and Snowrunner. Today, it’s The Missing J.J Macfield and the Island of Memories that I want to draw your attention to.

Take a look at A Plague Tale: Requiem in action below.

Released back in 2018, The Missing J.J Macfield and the Island of Memories is a puzzle-platformer horror that actually sees players take on the role of the missing titular character. J.J. is struck by lightning during a camping trip, becomes missing, and seeks out her love interest Emily but while searching for her, J.J must inflict wounds upon herself in order to solve puzzles and unlock secrets. Given the inclusion of self harm, this game clearly isn’t going to be for everyone.

It currently boasts a very respectable rating of 88% on Steam but the game is due to depart PlayStation Plus on 23 January and subscribers are urging those who haven’t sampled this title to give it a whirl. Reddit user Meadowbane wrote, “My recommendation: The Missing is a 2D horror game where you have to toss your own severed limbs to solve puzzles. You play as JJ Macfield, a college student searching for her missing situationship Emily on a creepy New England island. I felt the puzzles had the right amount of challenge, around the level of Portal 2. There are good examples of liminal spaces in the game, both gothic and modern, empty except for some dangerous and disturbing forgotten toys.”

They continued, “The story is deep, with touches of twisted humour. However, the story also engages with suicide and discrimination, so be warned. It’s not too long either.” In fact, according to HowLongToBeat, it takes around five and a half hours to roll credits. “I certainly enjoyed it despite the twisted mechanics,” yphastos added, while black_heaven said, “I already played it. It’s a good puzzle game.” If it’s taken your eye, dive in before it’s too late.
