The Saints Row developer has brutally shut down the idea of remaking the original trilogy of games, making it clear they won’t be revisiting them.

Remakes and reboots are funny things, on the one hand, they give games that might be dated by modern standards a fresh coat of paint or introduce a long-dead series to a brand-new audience. On the other hand, they can also rub fans the wrong way if they’re too different, or just plain inferior to the original.

That was the case with Saints Row (2022), a title that rebooted the beloved series about gang warfare and comical mayhem, which was poorly received by fans and critics for not quite hitting the same as the original. It was also held back by an avalanche of poor performance issues and bugs.

The reboot definitely left a poor taste in the mouth of fans, many of whom believe the developers would be better off remaking the original games, like Twitter user @DerikNovvaj23iv, who replied to the official Saints Row account which was celebrating the series’ 17th anniversary.

The user said: “What I feel is y’all should remake SR1&2. NOT with the same engine as with the SR3 remaster.”

This was met with an instant reply from the Saints Row developers, who fired back: “We have no plans to remake them.”

Definitely not the reply fans will have been hoping for, and it seems like the developers are content with leaving the previous games in the past, at least for the time being. It’s currently unknown if there are plans to continue the rebooted version of the series with a second game.

While it’s definitely not as good, some fans may like to know that the 2022 reboot will arrive on PlayStation Plus next month as one of the free Essential tier titles, though the announcement was unfortunately overshadowed by a price-hike that’ll soon hit the subscription service.

The original Saints Row games can still be played on current-gen platforms via backwards compatibility.
