The Game Awards are one of the most exciting awards nights of the year for gamers, so when nominations are finally announced, we all rush to see if our predictions have lined up with those of the judges. To our surprise, Starfield was pretty much snubbed by the awards, scoring only one nomination, which doesn’t include GOTY.
Here at GAMINGbible, we gave Bethesda’s sci-fi RPG ten out of ten, and while not everyone will agree with such a score, it’s fair to say that the game has many merits. Unfortunately, it’s also experienced many issues, failing updates that make the game worse, and a generally lukewarm reception with players.

Add into the mix the fact that games like Baldur’s Gate 3, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Alan Wake II have come out, and it’s becoming clearer as to why Starfield has taken such a noticeable backseat. Not that knowing all those things makes the news any less dramatic, especially considering Starfield was one of the most hyped games of 2023.

Such a quick fall from hallowed heights has got to sting the devs, even more so with the news that the sci-fi romp has fewer players than the 12-year-old Skyrim. The fact that such an old game, by industry standards, can so easily trump a newcomer is quite staggering. It all seems to be slipping away for Bethesda this year, and with Elder Scrolls VI years away still, any hope of them clawing it back feels like a tall order.
Still, The Game Awards 2023 shouldn’t be a night to mop, at least, not until we see our most loved games fail to get those top accolades; it’s also a night of revealers, trailers, and big news. As we already know, GTA VI isn’t going to drop a trailer until December, so it’s safe to rule that out (we hope), but who knows what else will make a splash on the big stage.
