Steam servers crash as users rush to download 122GB RPG on launch day

There were several reports of Steam outages yesterday, following the release of one of the most highly-anticipated games of all time.

Baldur’s Gate III was officially released for PC players yesterday, prompting thousands to start the stupidly large download and finally get their begin their 200-hour playthroughs.

There’s been an extraordinary amount of hype for the game, so much so that the developers offered out sick notes for players hoping for some time off to play the game.

The game’s download size has been a major talking about, as it’s absolutely enormous, rounding off at a ridiculous 122GB. Unless you’ve got a top-tier internet provider, it’s safe to assume you had a long wait ahead of you until the game was finally installed on your system.

Some had to wait slightly longer though, as the thousands of downloads seemingly proved too much for Steam, resulting in crashes for a lot of people. Taking a look at the Down Detector for yesterday, it shows a massive spike of reported problems from 4pm-5pm, coincidentally when Baldur’s Gate III was made available to download.

Baldur’s Gate III didn’t allow pre-installs, so everybody being forced to download the game at once was presumably the cause of the issue, especially given the file size.

Thankfully, the problem seemed to quickly resolve itself, allowing players to finally sink some hours into one of the most highly-anticipated RPGs ever made.

While PC players have been having a blast with the game, console players have a slightly longer wait on their hands. PlayStation users will be receiving a port of the game in September following a small delay. An Xbox version is also on the way, but Baldur’s Gate’s developers, Larian Studios, have said they don’t know when it’ll be ready for release.

Luckily, there’s new evidence to suggest Xbox players will soon have access to the first two Baldur’s Gate games through Xbox Game Pass.
