Starfield Xbox file size updated, is somehow even bigger now

Starfield is one chonky game!

It goes without saying that Starfield is going to be a huge game, but after a recent Xbox file update, the game is now chonkier than ever before.

Offering players the chance to delve into the depths of space, join any of nine factions, and investigate the pros and cons of three religions, we knew our consoles would need to be cleared of some dead weight if Starfield is to fit. There’s a lot to explore here, with some players having prepped for months after concerns they’ll lose thousands of hours of their life to this game.

Check out just how big Starfield is in the story trailer

Since Starfield went gold on 16 August, however, Todd Howard has helped quell our worries by confirming that the main campaign will only take up to 40 hours. Maybe 30 hours if you’re that bit speedier – we’re not even taking into account speedrunners who complete games within 10 minutes!

Nevertheless, while the estimated main story isn’t too overwhelming, the updated file size of 139.84GB is. As one Redditor said “Ouchy. Time to do some cleanup”, and boy oh boy did we share their sentiment. Currently, my Xbox is a mess after being out of action for quite some time, so I too feel the need to clean out the cobwebs and dead games…

Others fans were less surprised, however. Big-Concentrate-9859 said “Honestly, given the supposed scale of the game, it’s not a bad size. I’m pretty sure my MW2 and Warzone install size took up more space.” We can neither confirm or deny if this is the truth, but we believe they have a valid point here; Starfield is attempting to deliver a space RPG we’ve been waiting for, so requesting a reasonable amount of room to do its thing seems more than fair.

However, while many aren’t overly shocked by the size, some fans did make a point of drawing attention to how the Xbox S might be feeling right now. One user joked “My Xbox Series S has started sweating”. Considering that the Xbox Series S was the reason Baldur’s Gate 3 for Xbox was delayed, concern for whether their console will survive is well placed.

If you need to prepare your Xbox as well, don’t forget you have up until 6 September before the game comes to Xbox and PC.
