PlayStation 5 accidentally landed massive exclusive RPG thanks to Xbox

Has PlayStation 5 landed a massive RPG exclusive by accident?

Despite only currently being released on PC at the time of writing, Baldur’s Gate III is shaping up to be a firm Game of the Year contender for 2023.

Set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe, Baldur’s Gate III takes place over 120 years after the events of the previous game with players banding together to defeat the forces of darkness once more. Baldur’s Gate III is a massive game, to say the least, and we’re not just talking about critical reception. It’s been reported that it will take an estimated 200 hours to finish the RPG from Larian Studios and it apparently has 17,000 possible endings.

We think it’s fair to say that by the end of this year, it will be interesting to see the commercial and critical reception of Baldur’s Gate III alongside the highly anticipated Bethesda RPG, Starfield.

Due to Microsoft now owning Bethesda's parent company, ZeniMax Media, Starfield is an Xbox console exclusive, as well as it coming to PC. Microsoft will be pinning a lot of hopes on Starfield, especially as its latest console has struggled with a consistent supply of quality first-party exclusives. That being said, Starfield has already contributed to some gamers buying an Xbox Series X|S for the sole-purpose of playing the sci-fi RPG.

In contrast, PlayStation hasn't struggled with a quality stream of exclusives, but in terms of the RPG genre, the PS5 arguably has nothing that is truly comparable to the likes of Starfield or does it?

We know that Baldur’s Gate III is coming to Xbox Series X|S at some point. However, due to the technical limitations of the Series S, Larian Studios has delayed the Xbox version with no solid release date in sight until it finds a resolution. Until that resolve is found, Sony may have accidentally claimed itself a time-exclusive that may go toe-to-toe with Starfield, especially as Baldur’s Gate III shares the same release date as the Bethesda title.

Baldur’s Gate III is out now on PC and comes to PlayStation 5 on 6 September 2023. An Xbox Series X|S release date is yet to be announced.
