Are you already pulling your hair out at the thought of trying to get hold of a PlayStation 5 in time for Christmas? Well, pick that hair up off the floor and glue it back on your lovely head if you can, because it sounds like it might not be as much of a nightmare as we’d anticipated.

According to a new report from The Sun (thanks, T3), Sony is preparing an "unprecedented air-lift" in an attempt to help meet demand over the holiday period. The company is believed to have hired no less than three jumbo jets to transport the consoles, with thousands of PlayStation 5s expected to land in stores over the next few weeks.

The operation sounds so promising that I’m even willing to fight the urge to throw up in my mouth when I hear it’s alleged codename: “Santa Special”. According to the report, “Santa Special” (nope, sorry, just threw up) has already kicked off. The first and second deliveries arrived in the UK in late October, and are said to have contained 50 pallets full of consoles which were then transported to retailers around the UK via 12 articulated lorries.

"A phenomenal operation has been underway to stock UK shelves of PS5s for Christmas," a Sony source told The Sun.

"Sony just wants to keep fans happy after a slew of issues with its new kit, and this is an unprecedented air-lift. The 747 plane is rare after being decommissioned by British Airways, but carries a vast amount of cargo as a freighter aircraft. Each plane can bring in 100 tonnes of equipment on almost 50 pallets. It means millions of gamers will now be smiling this Christmas."

Two more jumbo jets are expected to arrive with even more consoles this month, and have been “specially chartered” to ensure the PlayStation 5 is readily available over Christmas. It’s either going to be a great Christmas for gamers everywhere, or yet another lucrative one for scalpers. Watch this space.
