PlayStation 5 surpasses PS4 after setting incredible new sales milestone

PlayStation 5 surpasses PS4 after setting incredible new sales milestone

The PlayStation 5 is due to shift more consoles in its third year than the PS4 did in its corresponding year.

We’re only a quarter of the way into 2023 and yet, Sony is already having what is proving to be an incredible year.

As I’m sure you’re aware, Sony boss Jim Ryan previously revealed that the PS5 shortage is officially over. That’s right. No more signing up for every Twitter and Discord stock alert going. Since then, PS5 sales have skyrocketed by 500% - with scalpers now selling stock below retail price as more consumers switch to legitimate means of purchase. It’s quite a different story for Xbox who are struggling to shift Series X consoles. It doesn’t help that Xbox’s latest major exclusive was panned by critics. Back in the land of PlayStation though, the PS5 has now reached a new sales milestone, surpassing a benchmark set by the PS4.

Who’s checked out the recent PS5 exclusive Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores? Take a look at the DLC in action below.

As reported by Kotaku, Sony is planning to sell a whopping 25 million PS5 consoles in 2023. In an earnings report, they wrote, “Last quarter, PS5 hardware sell-in reached 6.3 million units, a record high for PS consoles for the fourth quarter, and 19.1 million units for the full fiscal year of FY22.” Sony added that compared to March 2022, PlayStation had accrued 2.3 million more active players.

So, how does that compare to the beloved PS4? Industry analysis group Circana recently announced (thanks Kotaku) that PS5 sales have now surpassed the PS4’s at this point in the console’s life cycle. In its third year, the PS4 shifted 20 million consoles. As mentioned, Sony plans to sell 25 million units in the PS5’s current third year.

It’s still believed that a redesigned PS5 is on the way. In fact, a recent patent may have just given weight to this rumour. The new design would feature a detachable disc drive with insiders claiming that it’ll be announced this summer. I guess we’ll have to stay tuned for that one.
