A New PlayStation 5 Glitch Is Causing Major Download Delays

There's a new glitch in the PlayStation 5 which means that downloads must be restarted no matter how much has already been completed, and it's driving gamers round the bend.

This report comes from Lance McDonald, also known as @manfightdragon on Twitter. You might recognise the name as McDonald gained notoriety as the hacker who deconstructed P.T. to discover that Lisa was following us the whole time, we were actually Norman Reedus, and that the town seen in the ending is explorable. Moving on, he's got his own PlayStation 5, but it's not been smooth sailing for the next-gen gizmo.

He wanted to install Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition using a physical disc, but he didn't account for the fact that the PlayStation 5 will prioritise a system update over a game. Resultantly, the install bar for the game crawls slowly towards the finish line, while it downloads a different package of data, and there's no notification to tell the user that is what it is doing. If this is sounding spookily similar to any experiences you've had with your PlayStation 5, there's no need to peel back the panels and check the innards of the console. This appears to be an odd quirk of the operating system which may be ameliorated in a future patch from Sony.

Alas, this is not the only hiccup that McDonald had in his mission to install Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition. Partway through the installation process, the internet connection failed, and the PlayStation stated that it could not resume or continue installation owing to this fact. In order to fix it, he had to eject the disc, insert the disc, and the game started from scratch. Thankfully, it installed the game in less than twenty minutes, after stating it would be an hour while there was another download happening simultaneously, but the headaches incurred from what should have been a simple task are annoying.

At the moment, there has been one firmware update for the PlayStation 5, and it's not known whether this problem will be addressed in another update. Other users have heard a "coil whine" while playing in game, but not in the home menus. This sound is said to be similar to the PlayStation 4 Pro's coil whine, and most people aren't sure what could be the cause. Be that as it may, Sony is thrilled with the launch of the console, and claimed that "absolutely everything is sold."
