PlayStation Thinks Its AAA Exclusives Wouldn't Be As Good If Released On PS Plus

The jewel in PlayStation’s crown has always been its enviable roster of AAA exclusives. In recent months, we’ve had Horizon Forbidden West, and the release of God of War: Ragnarok continues to inch ever closer. When a first-party PlayStation exclusive releases, it’s often a sign that you’re in for a treat. Just look at their track record.

That being said, these games often come with a hefty price tag and you shouldn’t expect that to change anytime soon. PlayStation Plus may soon be receiving its overhaul to rival the Xbox Game Pass, but you won’t be seeing new AAA releases hit the subscription system.

Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki recently spoke out about PlayStation’s AAA strategy. Totoki believes that releasing major AAA exclusives on PlayStation Plus would lead to a deterioration in the quality of said games. He claims that a move like this would lead the company to have to rethink their investments in such projects.

“I will refrain from making comments on the competitors' strategy,” Totoki began. “Our current thinking is to have development costs [and] appropriate R&D investment for quality products, and that will improve the platform and also improve the business in the long run.”

He continued, “AAA type titles on PS5, if we distribute that on the subscription services, we may need to shrink the investment needed for that and that will deteriorate the first party title quality and that is our concern.”

“So we want to make sure we spend the appropriate development costs to have solid products [and] titles introduced in the right manner.”

He might not want to comment on competitor strategies, but Totoki is clearly referring to the fact that many AAA Xbox releases hit Game Pass on day one of release. It won’t be the news that some PlayStation fans were hoping for but the ongoing quality of first party titles is surely what we want the most.
