'Death Stranding' Finally Goes Gold As Kojima Thanks His Fans

I still might get a nosebleed every time I try to think too hard about the plot of Death Stranding and what the hell it all means, but I can at least now confirm that Hideo Kojima's upcoming, ambitious-sounding PlayStation 4 exclusive has finally gone gold after years of development, hype, weird trailers, and jokes about naked Norman Reedus and his funk fetus.

"Going gold", if you aren't familiar with the term, is a major milestone in development that means the product can be played all the way through and is of high enough quality to be sent off for manufacturing. It's basically the last big step on the road to release, so this is an exciting day for Kojima, his studio, and his fans. The man himself shared a heartfelt post on Twitter thanking everyone from Guerrilla, who made the engine for Death Stranding, to the fans who have supported the studio since its inception. Konami didn't get a mention, funnily enough.

"Got the gold master approval," Kojima wrote. "It's been three years nine months since the studio's inception. Able to mark the first step as the new Kojima productions. Thanks to Sony, Guerrilla, cast members, musicians, artists, staff & fans for supporting us from the start and all the way through!"

Death Stranding has a release date of November 8, and I think we can all agree that following the development of this game has been a wild ride. Kojima previously suggested even he doesn't even understand what the game is about anymore, before then claiming in another interview that parts of the game were inspired by Brexit and Donald Trump, before then arguing that Death Stranding is an entirely new genre and some people just won't "get" it.

If nothing else, it's been fascinating to see how Kojima has worked free of the restraints of Konami. He certainly seems like he's been really into development of Death Stranding and getting to work with the likes of Norman Reedus and Mads Mikkelsen. It's clearly a game he's passionate about and believes in, and that, at least, is a positive.

Personally, I'm keeping an open mind at this point, as I always do with games that I haven't actually been able to play myself. What I will say is that I do believe Death Stranding has the potential to be either truly groundbreaking or truly awful, and that we're almost guaranteed to have two camps that fiercely argue that it's one or the other. I guess we'll find out soon enough.
