'Death Stranding' Jar Baby Will Speak To You Through Your PS4 Controller

Look who's talking.

Hideo Kojima's upcoming PlayStation 4 exclusive Death Stranding seems like it's going to be a super weird game. So weird, in fact, that I feel like we've collectively shrugged off the fact that a large chunk of the adventure seems to revolve around Norman Reedus carrying around baby imprisoned in a jar as one of the more mundane aspects of the game.

The Bridge Baby, affectionately referred to by most of us as the Jar Baby, has a big role to play in Death Stranding. Exactly what role that is remains to be seen, but we know that the character Norman Reedus plays - the character we'll be controlling - has to lug the baby around in an incubator/pod full of liquid.

Given the little tyke's importance, we'll naturally have to take care of it as we traverse the post-apocalyptic landscape. The upshot of this is that if Jar Baby gets stressed or upset during your adventure - maybe because you've been a little too reckless with your cargo - it'll start crying and it'll be up to you to stop for a moment and calm it down by... rocking it. Sounds like a blast.

As if the prospect of a baby that could burst into tears at any moment wasn't enough to get you to head straight to Amazon to pre-order a copy of Death Stranding, Kojima has now revealed that, for added immersion, your infant companion's voice will be able to transmit through the speaker in your DualShock 4 controller.

Anybody with a child, or anybody who's been trapped on a plane or train with a crying baby, or even anybody who's played Yohi's Island will be undoubtedly be thrilled to learn that Death Stranding will have extra-immersive baby howling. I know it's what I look for in a game.

I'm all for using the DualShock 4 in interesting ways. I really liked how you'd have to give the controller a whack in The Last Of Us every now and again to keep your torch lit, for example. But the prospect of a baby screams coming out through my controller until I've calmed it down is... well, it's an unsettling one, is what it is.

Whatever your opinion on a crying controller baby, we don't have long to wait until we can experience it for ourselves. Kojima recently confirmed that Death Stranding had finally gone gold, and that you won't need to be subscribed to PlayStation Plus in order to enjoy the game's all-important online features.
