The delivery driver who was spotted driving away with a PlayStation 5 which was meant to be a birthday present has been let go by Amazon.
The CCTV recording from Jenni Walker, from Oxfordshire, shows a driver stopping their van outside their house. They pick up the big box containing the PlayStation 5, which was intended for Walker's son who had his sixteenth birthday on the day that the console launched in the UK. Purchasing aPlayStation 5 has been extremely challenging, owing to short stocks and sky-high demand for the next-gen gizmo. Some have even turned to scalpers so that they don't miss out on the launch, but have been burned for using unofficial sellers. Thinking that the console was safe with Amazon, Walker waited for the delivery to be in her hands.
However, the driver continues dropping off other packages to other houses, and then places the PlayStation 5 box back in the van. They drive away, claiming that the console has been delivered to Walker's address. Evidently, it has not been, and her husband Richard shared the footage to social media to attract the attention of Amazon. Walker didn't want the driver to get into trouble, so she started a conversation with the company's customer support to try and find the missing console.

Amazon replied, stating it would investigate this occurrence and issued her a refund. Walker didn't want a refund, though, as this would have ceased communications between her and the company, and it would become increasingly difficult to work out what happened to her PlayStation 5. Amazon then offered her a £5 gift voucher, which then was raised to a £50 gift voucher, as a form of compensation. While this was going on, Walker's daughter visited the local Amazon depot and spoke to the management there, showing them the CCTV footage. They confirmed the driver that was meant to deliver the PlayStation 5 was a member of their team, and confirmed that they would be sacked.
"We have very high standards for our delivery service providers and how they serve customers," said the company in a statement to the Oxford Mail. "The delivery associate will no longer be delivering on behalf of Amazon." It has also pledged to "put it right" following the PS5 deliveries that have been swapped for other objects, like cat food, air fryers, and bags of rice. Imaginably, these missing PS5s have popped up on second-hand sites, for ridiculously inflated prices.
