A lot of praise has been leveled at the PlayStation 5's ultra-fast SSD, which is said to help the hardware 100 times faster than the PlayStation 4. Now, some of the developers working on games for the upcoming next-gen console have shared how they're making use of the new tech in their titles, and there's lots to be excited about.

A new blog post goes into a ton of detail about the various ways in which the PS5 SSD has come in handy during development. But the one that really caught my eye came from Gavin Moore, Creative Director at SIE Japan Studio. SIE Japan Studio is currently working with Bluepoint on a remake of FromSoftware's cult classic Demon's Souls, and it sounds like there are some really exciting changes being made to the proto-Dark Souls RPG.

"As developers [of Demon's Souls], we are already changing the way we think about the SSD," Moore explained. "We see it not just as storage but also memory, utilizing the speed of the SSD to load data at blistering speeds, bringing you straight back into the action to avenge your many deaths."

In other words, Demon's Souls will leverage the PS5 SSD to get you straight back into the action after dying. Anyone that's played a Souls game before now will agree that this is a very promising step forward. Even if it's not the sexiest or most imaginative use of the SSD, it's by far the most welcome for a game in which you will be dying over and over (and over) again.

While loading screens in Dark Souls games have never been particularly cumbersome, I still have nightmarish flashbacks to the way Bloodborne was at launch. Being able to step into the unknown and face down monsters without fear of a loading screen eating into my gaming time every time I fall in Demon's Souls makes playing it all the way through a much more attractive proposition.

Previously, SIE Japan Studio promised that they're also making use of the PlayStation 5 DualSense controller's haptic feedback to ensure that players "feel every blow" of every weapon. No doubt there'll be other surprises in store when Demon's Souls launches later this year/early next year, but the idea of minimal loading is more than enough to convince me to get stuck in on day one.
