Epic Games Hails PlayStation 5 As A 'Masterpiece Of System Design'

Sounds pretty Epic.

The PlayStation 5 isn't even out till later this year, but Fortnite and Unreal Engine creator Epic Games is already a big fan of the next-gen console.

The company's VP of engineering Nick Penwarden has gone and record and hailed the PS5 as a "masterpiece of systems design". He worked with the console's development kit to create last month's incredibly impressive Unreal Engine 5 tech demo/PS5 gameplay reveal.

Speaking to Official PlayStation Magazine Penwarden described PlayStation's next-gen console as having made "revolutionary" leaps in terms of processing power and data management.

"The PlayStation 5 is a masterpiece of systems design," says Penwarden. "Not only is it driving a huge leap in computing and graphics performance, but it is also revolutionary in terms of storage and data compression technology, unlocking new kinds of games and experiences for players to enjoy."

Epic CTO Kim Libreri also spoke to OPM. He added, "next-gen graphics and processing power will not only make games more immersive, but will also enable entirely new gameplay concepts that can take advantage of fully dynamic environments and lighting, much improved physics, smarter AI, and richer multiplayer experiences."

Penwarden and Libreri's comments both echo the sentiment Epic CEO and founder Tim Sweeney shared after the Unreal Engine 5 reveal. Sweeney described Sony's console in glowing terms, explaining that its much-lauded SSD is "way ahead" of most modern high-end PCs.

"[The PS5] puts a vast amount of flash memory very, very close to the processor," Sweeney explained. "So much that it really fundamentally changes the trade-offs that games can make and stream in. And that's absolutely critical to this kind of demo. This is not just a whole lot of polygons and memory."

"It's also a lot of polygons being loaded every frame as you walk around through the environment and this sort of detail you don't see in the world would absolutely not be possible at any scale without these breakthroughs that Sony's made."

The PS5 certainly sounds like a powerhouse. Then again, so does the Xbox Series X, based on what we've heard so far. Xbox boss Phil Spencer certainly seems quietly confident that Microsoft's next-gen console has the launch games and hardware capabilities to take on Sony.

Microsoft is expected to share more details on the Xbox Series X at some point in July, along with some first-party game reveals and a better look at Halo Infinite in action. Meanwhile, there are rumours that Sony has more to share in August - although there's nothing concrete at this stage.
