A Final Fantasy 16 reveal is scheduled for later this week, if a number of enthusiastic fans and one swiftly deleted tweet are to be believed. Sony recently announced a PlayStation 5 showcase for September 16th, and while we don't know exactly what to expect in terms of new reveals, it's seeming more and more likely that a sequel to 2016's Final Fantasy XV is going to be announced.
As spotted by PS5COUNTDOWN on Twitter, Square Enix executive officer and Final Fantasy brand manager Shinji Hashimoto excitedly tweeted about the PlayStation 5 showcase news... and then quickly deleted it. Odd move, right?

This on its own might not seem especially fishy, but fans also recently came across an inactive Twitter account for Final Fantasy XVI. Xbox fans stumbled across almost the exact same thing for Fable just weeks before the game was officially announced, so there's a strong chance Square Enix has something brewing here.
The last PlayStation 5 event was packed with impressive reveals for first- and third-party games. Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Horizon Forbidden West, and a Demon's Souls remake were just a few of the massive surprises shown earlier this summer. While we certainly don't know for sure whether we can expect the same level of major reveals in this week's event, a new Final Fantasy announcement would certainly serve as an attention-grabber... as if all eyes weren't already on this showcase for updates on the PS5 price and release date.
There's also a (much smaller) chance that the Final Fantasy game we see during the event is the follow-up to Final Fantasy VII Remake. We already know that the game is in development for next-gen consoles, and that Square expects the wait between games to be a lot less substantial than the wait for the first instalment.
