Square Enix has confirmed that the sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remake has entered full development. In a substantial update, game director Tetsuya Nomura explained that he wants to deliver the second instalment "as soon as possible".

This update comes via a massive interview with Nomura in the latest issue of Japanese games magazine Famitsu. The details of the chat were later posted on the Ryokutya blog before being translated by Twitter user Aitaikimochi.

"We know that everyone wants the next instalment quickly," Nomura said in the same interview. "We would also like to deliver it as soon as possible. Since we were also able to see the line of quality from the first instalment, we hope to make the next instalment even better in quality that can make for an even better experience.

"We would like to get it out as soon as possible, so please wait for it. I think we can clearly convey the direction when we officially announce the next instalment."

"As soon as possible" could of course mean many things to many different developers. Square Enix has certainly been known to take its sweet time with releases, most notably Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy VII Remake. The latter was first announced way back in 2015, and didn't release until earlier this year.

That's probably a big part of way Square doesn't want to show anything off until it has something substantial to show, which is completely understandable. Final Fantasy VII Remake was a pretty great game, but it wasn't half rough around the edges in a lot of ways. I'm more than happy to wait a little longer for the second part if it means certain characters and environments don't look like they were taken from a PlayStation 3 game.

In our review, we have Final Fantasy VII Remake a 7, arguing that it almost certainly needed more time. Hopefully part two can get that extra time, and deliver everything that made is predecessor so awesome while sanding down those rough edges and making an experience that lives up to the original.
