This should be a time of celebration. The Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 are now available around the world, with Sony's next-gen console having finally launched in the UK and Europe yesterday. Unfortunately intense demand coupled with the unprecedented challenges of shipping next-gen hardware around the world in the middle of a pandemic means that not everybody got what they ordered in time for launch day.
In the UK there are plenty of gamers still waiting for their brand-new PS5 to arrive. As one of the lucky ones who got theirs before lunchtime yesterday, I've been looking on at these PlayStation-less gamers with a mixture of pity and relief. The whole idea of pre-ordering a console is to get it on launch day, so this is obviously a crappy situation.
And yet, in this darkness users have managed to find some light. Some shred of solace. On Reddit and Twitter, customers who are still waiting have managed to see the funny side, and are producing some genuinely killer memes that take aim at their predicament. Just take a look at Reddit user Noema91uk, who spent most of yesterday staring forlornly out of his kitchen window waiting for the delivery guy.
The PS5 subreddit is full of content like this right now. For every post talking about how amazing the new console is, there seems to be another from some poor soul who is still waiting. Whether ripping into delivery services like FedEx and Hermes, the struggles of trying to order from online retailers, or simply lamenting the passage of time, I feel these memes in my soul.
To everyone out there still waiting on a PS5: don't get give up. You will get what you're after eventually, and it'll be an amazing experience when you do. Stay strong, my friends - and keep on making memes.
