'Ghost Of Tsushima' Gets A Ton Of Praise From Yakuza Director

"It's so great."

Ghost Of Tsushima has won a lot of praise since releasing earlier this month. Toshihiro Nagoshi, who works as executive director of the Yakuza franchise, is just one of the many developers who's jumped in to share their appreciation for the PlayStation 4 open-world Samurai adventure.

During a recent Sega livestream (as spotted by Hacima, via Kotaku), Nagoshi was asked what he thought about the success of Tsushima and the fact that the game was created by Western studio Sucker Punch. While he thinks the game should perhaps have been made in Japan, he praised the amount of work and research that Sucker Punch put into development... despite not everything in the game being 100% historically accurate.

"To be honest, we [Japan] were beaten," he joked. "Yeah, of course, we're losing. Honestly, I think that's a game that should be made in Japan."

Nagoshi also enjoyed the black and white in-game filters that are designed to make Tsushima look more like the classic Japanese films of directors like Akira Kurosawa.

"The Kurosawa Mode doesn't simply change the color, but has more of a technical approach by properly changing the number of frames to that in old movies," he said.

"Foreigners who tickle the fancy of Japanese people more than Japanese people are...rather amazing, no?" he continued. "There's like a notion that Westerners don't understand things (about Japan), but that hypothesis itself is mistaken."

Nagoshi also shared his appreciation for the game's "Guiding Wind" feature. This subtle tweak to the open-world formula directs players to waypoints and quests via gentle gusts of wind, freeing the screen from a distracting minimap or any other intrusive markers. It's something that a lot of players - myself included - really enjoy, and Nagoshi agrees that it's "so great".

"There are numerous things I bow my head to, like aiming at setting a game in that time period...I could go on and on," said Nagoshi. "I feel an earnest sense of a job well done."
