'Ghost Of Tsushima' Lets You Stroke Foxes, GOTY Confirmed

Foxing clever.

Last night Sony showed off around 18 minutes of Ghost Of Tsushima in action, and it's safe to say most of us like what we've seen so far. Sucker Punch's open world samurai adventure looks to be a gorgeous, brutal affair with intense combat and plenty of focus on exploration.

But if you weren't already convinced by the Ghost Of Tsushima's two separate ways of approaching combat, or the fresh take on open world navigation, perhaps you can be won over by the fact that you can pet foxes? I know, that basically makes this GOTY material in my eyes too.

The minor (but fantastic) detail was confirmed as Sucker Punch explained how animals play into the game's version of Feudal Japan. Smaller critters like birds and foxes will lead you to secret locations containing treasure and other valuable gear, and you can show your appreciation to these newfound friends by giving them a lil' floof on the noggin. If you couldn't tell, I'm very much into this.

As someone who thinks any game containing animals should give you the option to pet any and all of the creatures you come across, I see this as a promising sign for Ghost Of Tsushima. Yeah, the combat and exploration look great, but give me a fluffy fox friend any day. I'd love if you could befriend one as a constant companion, but that doesn't look to be a feature, sadly. Maybe in the sequel.

Of course, while birds and foxes are clearly the best way of being led around the open world, that's not the only way we'll engage with our surroundings in Ghost Of Tsushima. Sucker Punch has a cool new feature that it calls "Guiding Wind", which basically replaces clunky waypoints with a more subtle approach in which a gust of wind gently guides you towards any new locations, points of interest, or objectives.

You can also be alerted to camps by billowing smoke on the horizon, and there are other neat audio and visua cues too. I still think the fox one is the best though.

The good news is we don't have too long to wait until Ghost Of Tsushima allows us to live out our wildest fox-petting fantasies. The PS4 exclusive is coming on July 17th, and will more than likely be the last major exclusive Sony releases before the PlayStation 5 arrives. Hopefully Sucker Punch can see the console off in style.
