Sony Santa Monica has rolled out a free update for God Of War, upping its visuals to 60 frames per second and 4K resolution on the PlayStation 5.

God Of War is included in the PlayStation Plus Collection, which offers PS Plus members a "curated library" of the most important and most impactful titles for the PlayStation 4. It ranges from Bloodborne, The Last Guardian, to Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, and features a scattering of games from third-party studios, like Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, Monster Hunter: World, and Persona 5. "PS4 games redeemed from the PlayStation Plus Collection and played on the PS5 console will see benefits such as increased loading speed and improved or more stable framerates with PS5's Game Boost," said Sony in the announcement, and now, it appears that one of these games is getting a major lift to make the most of the hardware.

Loading…

Now, the first time I ever played God Of War was on the PS5 (I was busy in 2018! And 2019 too. 2020 was a little less busy, but we all know why that was.). While I was soaking in the glorious world of Midgard, disapproving of Kratos' attitude to parenting, I had an inkling that Sony Santa Monica were rustling up something for the newest version of the game. Haptic feedback in the DualSense occurs for various actions and events in God Of War, and I had to stop myself and hand over the controller to someone else so that they could also react with appropriate awe. For example, when Kratos climbs a chain, the vibration alternates from left to right as each of his arms swings upwards to pull him and Atreus up.

Neat, right? And it's only going to get neater with this astonishing video graphics mode option. This is a new default setting for PS5, titled "Enhanced Performance Experience," and it brings 4K checkerboard resolution and 60 frames per second to Kratos and Atreus' journey. Sony Santa Monica shared two screenshots of the game running in the new mode, and the results are astonishing. I'm yet to platinum God Of War, and with it looking so snazzy, I've got no excuse to delay my trip to ancient Scandinavia. The studio has mentioned that the "Original Performance Experience" mode will still be available for players who prefer the other one, which is nice.

This new mode also offers a sneak peek at God of War 2, in a roundabout way. We know that the game will be built with the PS5's stunning specs as a foundation, and so we will expect to see buttery smooth resolutions from the get-go. Sony Santa Monica has kept its cards close to its chest, but we've got our ear to the ground on everything to do with the sequel.
