'God Of War Ragnarök' Delayed "Because Of Me," Says Kratos Actor

The much-anticipated sequel to 2018's PlayStation 4 hit God of War - one of our top 20 games of all time - was initially announced as a 2021 release. That, as you're probably aware of, isn't happening now - subsequent updates from PlayStation moved the game into 2022, but did finally confirm that its title was, indeed, God of War Ragnarök. Officially no colon, just like the Horizon games. Just so you know.

But why the delay? A worldwide healthcare crisis can't have helped - but nevertheless, there were many fans of the previous game who expressed disappointment at the pushing back into 2022. Some went so far as to harass people on the Ragnarök team, and those are the sorts of wastes of flesh and bone we should never call "fans" in our reporting. Get them in the bin. But for thousands and thousands of other players curious about one of the key reasons (as it's way more complex than just one thing) why the game got delayed, we now have a clear answer.

Did you see the new footage of God of War Ragnarök? You really should...

Actor Christopher Judge, who plays Kratos in 2018's release and its forthcoming sequel, has taken to Twitter to explain that he's one of the reasons why Ragnarök slid into a 2022 release window. He writes:

"I need to be forthcoming. This has been approved by no one. To the beloved fandom, Ragnarök was delayed because of me. August 2019, I couldn't walk. Had to have back surgery, both hips replaced, and knee surgery."

He goes on to add: "No threats, no 'who do you think you are?' Nothing but love and support. And Sony Santa Monica (the game's developer) has never said a word about the delay, and what caused it. Studios are assholes, but this company, from top to bottom, should give us hope."

Judge - who we recently spoke with, about his role in the Black Panther expansion for Marvel's Avengers (watch that video, with writer Evan Narcisse, below) - goes on to say that the team at Santa Monica Studio offered him "unconditional support and love"; and that Eric Williams, who'll direct Ragnarök in place of Cory Barlog, is "a motherf*ckin BEAST". In a good way, you understand. It's an endorsement. We hope Judge, who won a Gamer's Choice award for his portrayal of Kratos in 2018, has fully recovered from what troubled him.

In related God of War Ragnarök news, its version of Thor is fine, so stop complaining; and it sure does look like we'll be seeing Odin in this one, which'll also be the second and last God of War title to set itself in Norse mythology. The game will release for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in 2022.
