'God Of War' Sequel Could Focus On Kratos Meeting His Wife

'God Of War' Sequel Could Focus On Kratos Meeting His Wife

How I Met Your Mother

If 2018's excellent God of War proved anything, it's that Sony's Santa Monica Studio can take Kratos in any number of unexpected directions. The much-loved PS4 exclusive completely transformed Kratos from a one-note brute on a murderous revenge quest to a struggling single parent burdened by the horrors of his past.

It was a genius move from the team - one that earned God of War the Game Of The Year award at The Game Awards in 2018, as well as heaps of critical acclaim elsewhere. Oh, and an awful lot of commercial success.

We're coming up the to the two year anniversary of God of War though, and Santa Monica Studio must be feeling the pressure of that difficult second album. There have, of course, been multiple God of War games over the years, but the upcoming sequel will very much be the first big step in a brand new journey.

For now, it's unfortunately unclear where the franchise might go next, but the game's director Cory Barlog has shared some thoughts on where Kratos could go next. Specifically, it seems a future game in the series could delve into Kratos meeting his wife and Atreus' mother, Faye.

If you've played the 2018 game, you'll be aware that Faye's death/funereal is what sets the entire adventure in motion. While we don't ever see Faye at any point, her presence is consistently felt in the conversations between Kratos and Atreus. By the end of the game, it becomes clear that she knew a more about events than she might have let on while she was alive.

Speaking with PlayStation Access, Barlog revealed his desire to dive a little deeper Faye's backstory. He explained that, despite never seeing Faye, she was the character he identified with the most.

"You get to understand that she has way more power than all of them," Barlog said. "And is actually the controller of so much in this universe. That way when we build this up to when you actually get to see this, and I hope... I don't know how we're going tell this or when we're going to tell this, but I really want to tell the story of Kratos and Faye meeting."

You can watch the full interview with Barlog below. It's always very much worth hearing that guy talk about God of War, a franchise he so clearly cares so much about.

For now, we unfortunately have no idea when the follow-up to God Of War is coming, or what exactly it'll entail. We can assume it'll be released for the impending PS5, and that it'll likely follow the impending arrival of Ragnarok. Given the revelations left by Faye at the end of the 2018 game, I'd also bet that we'll be hearing from Kratos' wife again sooner rather than later.
