'Gran Turismo 7' Ray Tracing Will Only Be Active When You're Not Racing

We're pretty confident that Gran Turismo 7 will be a stunning-looking game when the racer releases for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 on March 4, 2022. Developers Polyphony Digital have always made their celebrated series quite the looker - but anyone hoping for a truly exceptional visual experience on PS5 might be dismayed to hear that one key graphical element won't be active outside of replays.

Gran Turismo 7 on PS5 will arrive with a stack of fancy bells and whistles, features that are only possible because of the capabilities of said hardware. Haptic feedback on the DualSense controller is going to make you feel closer to the tarmac than ever before, the action is locked at 60 frames per second, and the SSD will ensure long load times are a typing of the past. The game supports ray tracing, too - but here's where we hit our snag.

As reported on Push Square, ray tracing in Gran Turismo 7 will only be enabled during replays - not during gameplay. This was mentioned by series producer Kazunori Yamauchi in an interview with Game Watch (in Japanese), where he confirmed:

"For the time being, you can choose ray tracing in the replay. And then you can see the stage demo and the picture with ray tracing applied in the garage."

That's Push Square's translation of the quote that we're using, there, and they note that nobody at Sony is yet to confirm that ray tracing will only be available in this capacity. But with Yamauchi being the long-serving producer on Gran Turismo, and CEO of its developers, he probably knows a thing or two about what's coming in the next game.

It might be disappointing for PS5 owners and fans of all things Gran Turismo to read that such a buzz term in gaming won't be applicable right across the new game - but we're guessing that a compromise needs to be made to keep the racing action slick and steady. Anyway, no doubt someone out there will use this as a reason to memeaphorically smack PlayStation about with a big green stick, knowing that Forza Horizon 5 is using ray tracing to... oh, well, look at that. Forza 5 isn't using ray tracing in its actual racing, either - just in the Forzavista mode. As you were.
