Man Calls Police After PlayStation 5 Order Turns Out To Be Concrete Brick

A Utah man gave new meaning to the term "bricked console" this week when it emerged that his PlayStation 5 eBay order wasn't a brand-new next-gen console, but a slab of concrete.

Fox News (via Eurogamer) reports that the unlucky customer immediately informed police of the situation in an attempt to get some kind of justice. As it turns out the poor guy paid nearly $878 - nearly double the PS5's US retail price - according to a statement by police in the northern Utah city of Orem. By all rights the guy definitely deserves to be twice as angry as most people who didn't get their console, I guess.

To make matters worse, the brick had actually been shipped inside an actual PlayStation 5 box, meaning our hero didn't clock on that something was amiss until he actually opened the box to take the console out. You might be wondering how he didn't clock on after he picked the package up, but we all know that the PS5 is a chunky, hefty lad.

Obviously the police weren't about to put everything in to tracking down this rogue seller, and have simply advised the man to attempt to secure a refund via eBay itself. They also issued a warning/reminder not to purchase items through any sellers with zero feedback scores, which certainly seems sensible. It's not a less I imagine this guy had wanted to pay $878 for, but such is life.

"We condemn these opportunistic sellers who are attempting to mislead other users," eBay said in a statement against scalpers and dishonest PS5 sellers last week. "We are in the process of removing all listings for photos of PS5s from our marketplace and will be taking appropriate action against the sellers.

"For any purchase, but especially highly priced or in-demand items, buyers should exercise caution and thoroughly read the listing description. Buyers who receive an item which is not as described are entitled to a refund via our eBay Money Back Guarantee, provided they completed the transaction on the eBay platform."
