Spider-Man Is The Most Profitable Super Hero Ever, And It's Not Even Close

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is looking pretty perfect with Peter and Miles facing off against an iconic baddie.

Your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man is the most lucrative superhero on the block, raking in more than $1.3 billion in global retail sales for Marvel.

On paper, it's a bit odd that a guy who's been bitten by a radioactive spider gaining a "spider-sense" along with the ability to crawl up walls and shoot webs to swing across the city of New York resonated with people from all over the world. However, since his introduction in 1962, the character has gone from strength to strength on the silver screen, in video games, in art and even portrayed in a musical.

"Most super heroes had problems no more complex or relevant to their readers' lives than thwarting this month's bad guys... Parker had far more serious concerns in his life," said Peter Sanderson, comic book critic and historian, in the . "Coming to terms with the death of a loved one, falling in love for the first time, struggling to make a living, and undergoing crises of conscience."

Check out the trailer for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 below, featuring Peter and Miles showing off their incredible skills and facing off against a villain I should have seen coming, to be honest. The hype is off the charts!

That statistic is derived from data from 2013, so it's possible that the amount of money that Marvel makes from the character is much higher now. Marvel's Spider-Man, developed by Insomniac Games, is bound to have had an impact on global retail sales of Spider-Man as it was the fastest-selling superhero game in the United States upon its launch in 2018. The remastered version of the game arrived for PlayStation 5 with almost instantaneous loading, haptic feedback and a brand new Peter replacing actor John Bubniak.

Well, we all know how the introduction of Ben Jordan's Spider-Man went down, so let's move onto the fact that we're getting a game with Peter and Miles in 2023! Seriously, you should have seen the GAMINGbible team when that trailer was shown off during Sony's latest showcase. Uncontainable.

The two Spideys will be battling Venom, and personally, I'm annoyed at myself. I definitely should have twigged that the symbiote would be front and centre in the sequel given the teases in Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales and that the game is Sony's toy. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is coming exclusively to the PlayStation in 2023.
