'Marvel's Spider-Man 2' Reportedly Coming To PS5 Sooner Than We Think

Marvel's Spider-Man was quite easily one of the finest video game experiences of 2018. The Insomniac Games-developed PS4-exclusive adventure was, quite simply, the best game starring the webhead we've ever had. Depending on who you ask, it's also hailed as the greatest superhero game to date. I don't think it quite nabbed that particular title from the Arkham games, but I sure did love it.

I should point out that a sequel hasn't officially been confirmed yet. That doesn't mean that a return to Insomniac's Spider-Man universe isn't on the cards, though. Given that Spidey's PS4 adventure was an all-round critical and commercial stonk machine, a PS5 follow-up has always seemed certain.

Leaving aside the fact that the end of the first game left the door wiiide open for a sequel, Sony is surely all too aware that releasing a follow-up on PS5 is a surefire way to attract people to the upcoming next-gen console.

According to a new report, it seems that Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is indeed currently in development - and it'll be with us sooner than we might have thought. Speaking on the latest Kinda Funny Gamescast, video game journalist Imran Khan claimed to know a thing or two about the rumoured sequel.

"I know too much about [Marvel's Spider-Man 2], so I can't speculate too much," Khan said. "I think a Spider-Man 2 will come sooner than we think." Khan also pointed to a "Christmas 2021" release window earlier in the podcast. The PS5 is expected to launch around Christmas 2020, so I can't think of a better way to see off the console's first year than with a sequel to a beloved PS4 hit.

Marvel's Spider-Man was announced to the world during E3 2016, and was released in September 2018. Of course, it's likely that the first game was in development for some time before its E3 reveal. Christmas 2021 does seem like a believable timeframe for the potential sequel, at least.

After all, Insomniac already has the web-swinging and movement/combat down. If we assume that the studio is porting its engine over to the next-gen console rather than starting from the ground up, then the end of 2021 doesn't seem too impossible. As always, we'll have to wait for official word, but it's exciting to think that Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is in development as we speak.

The PS5 is already shaping up to be a potentially strong console for fans of single-player games. While Sony has yet to confirm what first-party titles will be gracing the next-gen machine, there have been rumours of follow-ups to God Of War, Horizon Zero Dawn and Days Gone, in addition to Spidey.

My one wish for Insomniac's sequel? Give me the classic black/venom suit. Given how the first game ended, I'd imagine that wish will indeed be granted.
