Californian studio Insomniac Games confirmed the development of not one but two new Marvel games during the PlayStation Showcase stream of September 9 (y'know, the one that also gave us our first proper look at God of War: RagnarökGod of War: Ragnarök, the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake, and much more).

Firstly, and most obviously, the team is working on the sequel to 2018's Marvel's Spider-Man, one of the PlayStation 4's biggest critical and commercial hits - and unsurprisingly, it'll be called Marvel's Spider-Man 2. You can expect that one, which stars Peter and Miles seemingly facing off against Venom, sometime in 2023. And then there was the surprise announcement: Insomniac is also working on an as-yet-undated game based on Wolverine. The title? Right now, it's simply Marvel's Wolverine.

Here, why not check out the trailer for Wolverine, below...

With Spider-Man 2 dated for 2023 and Wolverine probably beyond that, it might not surprise you to learn that Insomniac is not developing these games for the outgoing PlayStation 4. Rather, these titles will be exclusive to the PS5 - just as Spider-Man of 2018 was only on the PS4 and not the PS3. The studio tweeted this confirmation, as follows:

"We're ecstatic to announce Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and Marvel's Wolverine are coming exclusively to PlayStation 5. Stay tuned for more information!"

Disappointed? Right now, it's fair to be a little bummed that the follow-up to Spidey's PS4 adventure is strictly new-gen, especially as Sony has said it'll support its older console at least into 2023. But then again, Insomniac will want to use every advantage that developing exclusively for new-gen hardware affords them, to avoid the differences in end product we're going to see in 2022's Horizon Forbidden West.

Hopefully, PlayStation 5 consoles become somewhat easier to pick up, before the release of Marvel's Spider-Man 2. Short supply of key parts could keep quantities down until 2023, but, fingers crossed. Wolverine and Spider-Man weren't the only Marvel characters featured in the PlayStation Showcase, as we got another good look at October 2021's Guardians of the Galaxy game - and you can read a lot more about that, right here.
