Sony has updated the official PlayStation 5 accessories page, giving us our best look yet at the upcoming DualSense controller. Thanks to a new 360-degree image, we have confirmation that the next-gen controller won't feature back buttons or triggers - despite speculation that it would build on an existing PS4 controller add-on.

As you can see below, the back of the DualSense controller is actually pretty sparse. It features the same shoulder triggers as its predecessor, but adds nothing new to the mix. This is particularly surprising, because Sony released an attachment for the DualShock 4 last year that added two back buttons, which players could assign functions to. The assumption was that this release was indicative of what we could expect from the next-gen controller... but evidently not.

The PS4 back button attachment gave players the option of removable triggers that had numerous uses. Outside of giving players who enjoy games at a more competitive level an edge, being able to assign these triggers as any number of buttons went some way to making a number of games more accessible for those who might not have been able to use a DualShock 4 as it was for whatever reason.

Microsoft's official Xbox Elite Wireless Series 2 controller will come equipped with removable triggers, for those that are interested in such a feature. There's also the Xbox Adaptive Controller, which can be configured in any number of ways to cater to various disabilities. There's every chance Sony is working on something similar to the Elite controller, or even a new back button attachment. For now, however, it seems the standard DualSense will be going without.

Earlier this week, Sony also confirmed that PlayStation 4 controllers won't work with PlayStation 5 games. In answer to a commonly asked question, the company wrote on the PlayStation Blog that "no, we believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we're bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller."

You will be able to play PlayStation 4 games on your PS5 with your old controller if you want to though, so at least there's that.

This, of course, is completely counter to Microsoft's approach. You'll be able to play Xbox Series X games on your next-gen Microsoft console with an Xbox One controller. Heck, you'll be able to play a number of Xbox Series X games using your Xbox One console, if that's the way you want to go.
