New PlayStation Research Confirms Single-Player Is Absolutely Thriving

People still love gaming on their own

A recently leaked PlayStation report says that gamers are still loving single-player games - in fact, they are thriving. Although multiplayer games are massive market gamers are still loving spending alone time with their consoles - Call Of Duty: Warzone isn't for everyone.

In leaked documents reported on by Vice, it shows that although titles focussing on multiplayer modes, players are regularly spending more time offline than online to enjoy their games. These documents are only from 2019 so although the results aren't going to be wildly different from the way gamers are enjoying themselves now, there is also a consideration to be made for people leaning into games as a social element during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic.

Players commented on the problems they experienced when playing single-player campaigns. Some didn't like not knowing how long a session had to last - "no idea how long I might news, don't play unless I have 2+ free hours". Others recalled the long time issue of not remembering what you were doing last time you were in the game (regrettably I think this something a lot of us can relate to).

Sony concludes that the biggest problem with single-player games for players when they have many other commitments in their life is that people don't have enough information to know if they can enjoy a single-player experience in the 20 minutes they have free, while it's easier to play a match of an online game in that time.

Sony, therefore, is proposing a new universal system of activities in games where through UI the game will allow you to see nearby activities and missions in games with a time estimate to tell you how long these missions may take. This system is already in place with Astro's Playroom and Sony wants to make this a habit in all titles coming to the PS5.

Along with the in-game guides, Sony wants to make it as easy as possible for you to enjoy the games you buy. Guides, timings, and maybe more features on the way could help that. We'll have to see if the PS5's approach changes how we play.
