PlayStation Wants To Release More Live-Service Games

In its quarterly financial meeting, Sony announced the strategy for PlayStation was to publish 10 more live service games by 2026.

Sony carves out its niche in the console market with its devastating array of spectacular single player games. It won't be long before we can journey with Aloy in Horizon Forbidden West, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart was one of the best games of 2021, and Sony's reboot of God Of War is storming the Steam charts despite being almost four years old. However, while Sony has a huge library of critically acclaimed solo stories to point to when people ask what there is to play, there are a few areas where the PlayStation lacks exclusives.

There isn't a lack of multiplayer action to be had on PlayStation. Popular online games such as Rocket League, Apex Legends and Fortnite are all available on the platform, but due to cross-play features and their availability on multiple other systems, it reduces players desire to go out hunting for the fabled console; The PlayStation 5.

Now, in its quarterly financial meeting Sony has announced it plans to have ten new live service games for PlayStation 5 by 2026. According to Comic Book, this is all part of Sony's greater plan which has lead to its acquisition of Bungie. The company now owns a number of development studios such as Naughty Dog, who have been reportedly working on a live service, multiplayer game based on the world of The Last of Us.

Sony claimed that this recent acquisition is the first of many it is planning to make. However, CFO Hiroki Totoki said that Sony will be trying to "learn from" Bungie on how to develop online multiplayer games successfully. Another of these games rumoured to be in the works is a remake of racing franchise Twisted Metal which last had a release with an online element back in 2002.
