It's the end of an era, albeit an era a lot of us probably already assumed had ended. According to a new report, Sony is gearing up to shut down the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, and PlayStation Portable stores in just a few months.
According to a source close to the situation that has since been verified by TheGamer, these stores are set to close their virtual doors for good on July, with an announcement planned for the end of this month. If there are any digital PlayStation 3 games you wanted to grab, now might be the time to do it.
TheGamer understands that the PSP and PS3 stores are gone from July 2, while the Vita store will hang around for slightly longer before bowing out on August 27. After this, it'll be impossible to buy digital copies of games or DLC for any of the three consoles.
This probably won't come as much of a shock to anyone, of course. The PS3 ended production four years ago after an incredibly successful 11 year run, and the vast majority have now upgraded to a PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5. It's also worth noting that you can probably get most PlayStation 3 games for less than a tenner online or in second-hand game stores these days.

Still this is an admittedly concerning development for those few who might have still been relying on a PS3 and the ability to purchase games digitally, for whatever reason. It's also yet another ending for the PS3, a console most of us had already said goodbye to some years ago. Nobody likes being reminded that things are over, and a definitive ending for the PS3 digital storefront is just another nail in the coffin of a long-buried console. That's pretty damn sad whichever way you swing it.
