The PlayStation 4 was the best-selling console of the decade in the US. That's according to a new report from market research company The NPD Group, which recently shared its list of the best-selling hardware of the 2010s (in the US). While the Nintendo Switch dominated 2019, it was Sony's current-gen machine that won the decade.

"Nintendo Switch was the best-selling hardware platform of both December and 2019," NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said. "While Sony's PlayStation 4 finished as the best-selling hardware of the decade."

It probably won't come as a massive surprise to any of you that the PS4 ended the decade on top, especially given its continued and fairly consistent success over the last few years. In October last year, the PS4 became the second best-selling home console in history, surpassing 102.8 million units sold and putting it just ahead of the Nintendo Wii's 101.6 million.

While it just recently snuck past 106 million sales, it still has some way to go before it beats the PS2's monstrous 155 million.

In December, Guinness World Records officially recognised PlayStation as "the best-selling home console brand" in history. That took into account the sales of the original PlayStation (102.5 million), PS2 (155 million), PS3 (87.5 million), and PS4 (106 million). Can you spot which console made the least difference?

"Back when we were developing the original PlayStation, we had the ambition to sell 1 million units, former Sony CEO Ken Kutaragi said at the time.

"I look back on that now with nostalgia. We launched the PlayStation platform with the aim of changing the face of entertainment. Receiving this award today, I feel the support of the players who have enjoyed our consoles over the years, and as the father of the PlayStation, I can see it has a bright future."

The NPD Group also recently revealed the ten best-selling games of the decade in the US, and you'll doubtless be completely underwhelmed to learn that GTA V was at the top of that particular pile. But what would you say if I told you that the rest of the list, out of ten games, featured seven Call of Duty games? Would that shock and amaze you? No? No... I didn't really think it would.
