Yeah, yeah, yeah. I might praise the PlayStation 4 til the cows come home, but that doesn't change the fact that Sony has turned its focus to the next generation. Earlier this year, fans were in a spin when a Japanese retailer reported that various PlayStation 4 models will not be restocked, throwing the future of the console into uncertainty. Yet, the company has been adamant that the arrival of the PlayStation 5 doesn't mean it's curtains for its predecessor. "The PS4 community will continue to be incredibly important to us for three or four years," said Jim Ryan, the boss of PlayStation. "Many will transition to PS5, we hope if we do our job well, but tens of millions will still be engaged with the PS4."
So, it's not especially heartening news to know that your PlayStation 4's clock battery determines your access to your digital games. Let's roll it back for a second. Trophies on the PlayStation 4 are dependent on the system's clock in order to show the precise time and date of when they were unlocked. This stops people from changing their system clock so it looks like the Trophy was bagged before it was possible to do so. Not sure why you'd do that, but hey ho. However, it was discovered that if the clock's battery goes flat, then the player literally cannot start their digital games.
Batteries are always going to go flat eventually, so there might have been some sort of solution to circumnavigate this eventual occurrence. Twitter user Forest_Reviews went one step further and took out the battery to see whether it would be possible to access games without the need for an accurate internal system clock. Lo and behold, no physical or digital games work when this is done.
This is upsetting, to say the least, as players have accrued quite the collection of games that they might want to return to while they wait for a PlayStation 5. Fortunately, the specific error which pertains to a flat clock battery (PS4 Error (CE-34878-0)) isn't very common, so you'll just need to be across the status of your PlayStation 4 as the years go by. Plus, all your favourite games will be accessible on the PlayStation 5 through backwards compatibility. It's not all doom and gloom. Just a little bit.
