PlayStation 5 Download Speeds Substantially Faster Than PS4, Early Tests Find

It sounds as if download speeds on the PlayStation 5 are substantially quicker than those we're used to on PlayStation 4. Fantastic news for those of us who decide to buy games from the PlayStation Store over the weekend only to see most of our Saturday evaporate into the either as titles take their sweet time downloading and installing.

In its own review of the console US Gamer compared download times of two games on PS4 and PS5. Disgaea 5: Alliance Of Vengeance demands 6.5GB of space, which isn't bad going at all. This took 10 minutes and 42 seconds to download on PS4, while the PS5 managed it in 1 minute and 58 seconds.

Meanwhile, Fist Of The North Star: Lost Paradise (36.6GB) took 58 minutes and 34 seconds on PS4. On PS5? It took 7 minutes and 1 second. Wow.

Obviously there are a ton of variables at play when it comes to download speeds. US Gamer was testing with a wired connection and fiber-optic, which is always going to be faster. Still, even you're like me and are stuck with a dodgy wireless connection, there's no getting around the fact that in both instances, US Gamer found the PS5 download speeds were roughly five times quicker. Regardless of your own internet situation then, you're bound to see a noticeable improvement.

In GAMINGbible's own review of the next-gen console, our very own Mark Foster wrote that the PS5 is an absolute powerhouse. "There's no mistake that Sony are serious about making the PlayStation 5 your essential buy this year, maybe even this decade," he wrote. "Make no mistake that the PS5 is just getting started, and the next generation starts here."

In other, slightly less exciting PS5 news, we've also learned from various other reviews that there's currently no way to move your next-gen games from the SSD to an external HDD. While you can move your PS4 games between the SSD and an external HDD, next-gen titles will remain on the SSD with no way to transfer them anywhere else.

The upshot of this is that to clear space for new games on the PS5 at launch, you'll probably have to delete titles and redownload them at a later date. While we will be able to purchase storage expansions eventually, these won't be available in time for the hardware's November release date. Still, with such impressive download speeds, deleting and reuploading content as needed shouldn't be quite as much of a hassle, should it?
