PlayStation 5 Launch Games 'Scratch The Surface' Of What Console Can Do, Says Dev

The older the PS5 gets, the better the developers will know how to use it

Ahead of the PlayStation 5's release, one developer has said that the console's launch games are just scratching the surface of the potential of the next-gen release. Insomniac's technology director Mike Fitzgerald spoke to IGN and claims that although Spider-Man: Mile Morales looks amazing, it's not to the full potential of what the hardware can achieve.

In the interview with IGN, Fitzgerald is quoted saying "It feels like we're just scratching the surface of what you can do with hardware like [the PS5]. That we sort of can take a game model like Spider-Man and make everything really fast. Even the Ratchet and Clank game we're working on is leaning into that, a lot."

Insomniac is also responsible for another big PS5 title on its way, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart which was used a lot in early previews of the PlayStation 5 to show off SSD capabilities. The trailers for the game are incredibly good looking and phenomenally impressive as Ratchet portals from dimension to dimension.

Fitzgerald continues on to say that as the new generation of consoles goes on, that developers will have "years and years of scraping more and more performance" out of the console. Teams will be able to hone games performances to the capabilities of the hardware and continue impressing us as an audience for a while to come.

We're already wowed by what we've seen of Spider-Man: Miles Morales, including the amazing cat companion that has stolen our hearts, so if Insomniac is promising more impressive feats as developers get to grips with what Sony has provided them, then we're not complaining.

Our PlayStation 5 review already tells you how good we think the console is, but we also want to stress how good the PlayStation 5 controller is with its new haptic feedback. We are similarly in love with the new Xbox in our Xbox Series X review, so whichever console you've chosen going into next-gen, you're in good hands.
