PlayStation 5 Reveal Event Finally Coming Next Week, Reports Suggest

The long-rumoured PlayStation 5 event is now all-but guaranteed to be taking place next week. Multiple reports from journalists who've spoken to sources at Sony seem to agree that June 3rd is when the long-awaited reveal of the console is finally set to go down. However, it's unclear if we'll get much of a look at upcoming games for the next-gen hardware.

Bloomberg's Jason Schreier and Takashi Mochizuki both understand that the event is currently scheduled for next week. They do also acknowledge that "plans have been in flux and that the date may change". Unsurprising, given the rapidly evolving nature of the global pandemic that we're all currently living through.

The report also suggests that Sony is planning multiple events, meaning everything we want to learn about the PlayStation 5 might not be revealed in one sitting. Specifically, it sounds as if we'll definitely be getting a first-look at the console... but we'll have to wait a little bit longer for price, release date, and games.

VentureBeat then followed up with its own sources, and confirmed that the June 3rd event will most likely be a first-look at the console itself and maybe some news regarding games. Don't go in expecting sequel announcements for God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn, basically.

This all tracks with previous rumours that suggested Sony was planning a State Of Play presentation in August. Presumably this is where we'll learn about whatever first-party games are being cooked up, with any third-party titles inevitably being revealed throughout the deluge of announcements and digital events scheduled for the next few months. I kind of miss E3 keeping this all in one easy-to-follow place.

This isn't the first time that late May/early June has been floated for the PS5 event, and as we head into June, the 3rd is looking more likely than ever. As always, we'll have to wait for official word from Sony, but hopefully we'll get an announcement of some kind soon.

It's been an undeniably slow build to the actual PlayStation 5 reveal so far. March saw Sony show off the PlayStation 5's full specs in a tech-heavy deep dive, but that feels like decades ago now. Not long after, we got our first look at the console's brand-new DualSense controller.

The stunning Unreal Engine 5 tech demo earlier this month gave us our first real taste of what the console can do. Unfortunately, the fully playable tech demo was just that - a tech demo. I think it's about time we saw some actual games, don't you?
