Well I'll be damned. Sony has officially confirmed that the PlayStation 5 reveal event is finally set to take place next week, on Thursday June 4th. Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan confirmed the long-awaited news in a blog post, announcing that the future of PlayStation will be showcased during an hour-long stream that kicks off at 9pm on Thursday.

It's unclear whether or not this event will give us our first look at the console itself, but we now have confirmation that the stream will offer a look at some of the games coming to PS5 at launch - and beyond.

"There are few things as exciting as the launch of a new console. While this road to launch has been a bit... different, we are as thrilled as ever to bring you with us on this journey to redefine the future of video games," Ryan wrote. "We've shared technical specifications and shown you the new DualSense wireless controller. But what is a launch without games?"

"That's why I'm excited to share that we will soon give you a first look at the games you'll be playing after PlayStation 5 launches this holiday," he continued. "The games coming to PS5 represent the best in the industry from innovative studios that span the globe. Studios, both larger and smaller, those newer and those more established, all have been hard at work developing games that will showcase the potential of the hardware."

He concluded: "This digital showcase will run for a bit more than an hour and, for the first time, we will all be together virtually experiencing the excitement together. A lack of physical events has given us an amazing opportunity to think differently and bring you on this journey with us, and hopefully, closer than ever before. This is part of our series of PS5 updates and, rest assured, after next week's showcase, we will still have much to share with you."

This reveal probably won't come as much of a surprise to those of you who've been keeping an eye on gaming news this week. Multiple reports suggested that Sony would be holding some kind of event on June 3rd - one day off isn't too shabby at all.

However, those same reports also warned for fans to maybe not get too excited. It's likely that the games announced during the initial reveal will be third-party titles, with bigger exclusive games set to be revealed at a later event that's planned for August. We'll have to wait and see, but either way it'll be exciting to finally see the future of PlayStation at last.
